Jessica Ennis-Hill is one of three British heptathletes, alongside Denise Lewis and Kelly Sotherton, who have won Olympic medals. Ennis-Hill hopes to retain her title in Rio and she could be joined on the podium by a British teammate, Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Three recent decathlon gold medallists are from the United States, Dan O’Brian, Bryan Clay and Ashton Eaton who, like Ennis-Hill, is aiming for a second victory this year. Past American heroes of the discipline include Rafer Johnson, Bob Matthias and Jim Thorpe.
