Twenty Year Medal Table for Diving

Summer Olympic Games 1996 – 2012

Dmitry Medvedev and Dmitriy Sautin

Dmitry Sautin (right) won eight Olympic medals and so, by one measure, he is the most successful diver in history. However, only two of them were gold. On every occasion in which he stood on the lower steps of the podium, a Chinese diver finished ahead of him.

China has won three quarters of all recent gold medals and its rivals have learned that the only way to keep up is to hire a Chinese coach, as Australia and Canada have done.

Mexico has a great tradition in diving, dating to Joaquin Capilla’s four medals between 1948 and 1956. There are now signs of a revival, helped, of course, by a Chinese coach.
