Japan once dominated Olympic men’s gymnastics, winning the team competition at every Games from 1960 to 1976. More recently, China has been the dominant power, but Japan is on its way back. Kohei Uchimura could be the first to retain the men’s all around title since Sawao Kato in 1972. He already has seven global all around golds.

Arthur Zanetti will be attempting to defend his rings title for the hosts in Rio, while double world medallist Manrique Larduet could win Cuba’s first ever Olympic medal.

Great Britain won its first gymnastics medal in 1908 but has never won gold. It has a strong bid to change that in the pommel horse, with Max Whitlock and Louis Smith.
