Summer Olympic Games 1996 – 2012
Despite being a team game, volleyball is a sport in which a few individuals have made a huge difference. Eugenio George Laffita coached the Cuban women’s team to three gold medals in a row between 1992 and 2000. Regla Torres was one of the stars of that side.
The rise of volleyball in Brazil is attributed to Carlos Arthur Nuzman, who was elected the president of the Brazilian federation in 1975. He is credited with innovations such as introducing sponsorship of uniforms as a way of generating income for the team. He will have a ringside seat as president of the organising committee for the Games in Rio.
