Germany’s throwing dominance is part of a national tradition, which includes an annual meet in Halle for these four events alone. But Poland, the new kid in the throwing circle, could overtake in Rio – it has three world champions, all with a good chance of a repeat.
The javelin is a specialism of its own. All Norwegian medals in this list, all Czech medals but one, and all Finnish medals but one are from this event. And the traditional powers are being joined by some surprising countries. The men’s champion is Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, and his successor could be Team World‘s Julius Yego of Kenya.
